About Jan

Documentary film editor Jan Sutcliffe is an accomplished long-form editor with strong expertise in shaping documentary programs for broadcast distribution. Her passion is cinéma-vérité, but she also excels in historical and interview based films as well as advocacy projects.

A Passion for Film

A Kodak kid from Rochester, New York, film’s been in Jan’s life from her first steps. An early interest in photography developed into a lifelong passion for film. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in French literature from Colgate University she completed her Master’s degree at the Center for Media Study at SUNY Buffalo where she studied with Hollis Frampton, Steina and Woody Vasulka, and Thom Anderson. Beginning her career as a film editor cutting on 16mm, Jan became an early exponent of emerging non-linear video formats and is equally adept on Avid and Final Cut Pro platforms.

Experience and Expertise

Over the past twenty years, Jan has had the good fortune to work as a long-form documentary editor with some of the best individuals working in documentary films and television journalism today including Bill Kurtis, Peter Gilbert, Tod Lending, Jonathan Towers, Bob Hercules, and Bob Schneiger. She has edited numerous programs for broadcast and cable distribution including American Justice (A&E), American Greed (CNBC), Biography (A&E), Investigative Reports (A&E), and POV and Independent Lens (PBS) as well as documentary specials for the NBC, National Geographic, History, and PBS networks.
